Most patients wear their braces for approximately 18 to 24 months, but the exact time period depends on your teeth and unique dental needs. Your orthodontist will be able to give you a more concrete timeline.
You may have some discomfort when you first get braces, but it won’t stop you from participating in most of your daily activities. If you play a woodwind or brass instrument, it may require an adjustment period as the braces themselves may impact how you play. If you participate in a contact sport, you may need to use a mouthguard to protect your teeth.
A good rule is to avoid all foods that are sticky, chewy, or crunchy. Some good examples of foods you shouldn’t eat include popcorn, gum, lollipops, gummy bears, or beef jerky.
Braces can trap bits of food and plaque by your teeth, so it’s important to brush your teeth twice a day and use floss threaders or orthodontic floss to reach between the teeth and under the wires. You will be coming into the office regularly for adjustments, but don’t forget to schedule your regular dental checkups.
Most patients will be seen every 4-6 weeks to monitor progress and make adjustments.
Depending on your unique needs, your dentist may suggest extracting teeth as a part of your treatment plan. Extractions are commonly recommended for wisdom teeth to avoid overcrowding.
