Cleaning

Whether it has been 6 months or 20 years, we want to make sure you understand the different types of cleanings and why you may need each one. At Risas, we offer three types of cleanings, and depending on the condition of your teeth and gums, the appropriate cleaning will be provided. While the purpose of all dental cleanings is to clean the teeth and improve oral health, how and why they are performed is what distinguishes them from each other.

Adult teeth cleaning

Adult Basic Cleaning

An adult basic cleaning consists of getting rid of hardened tartar (calculus), plaque, and stains that have stuck on the teeth. This type of cleaning is best for individuals that need only to maintain their oral health. Basic cleaning is recommended every 6 months to prevent excessive build-up of calculus and plaque as well as to prevent gum disease.

Kids Basic Cleaning
A child cleaning consists of polishing the child's teeth with a rotary polisher. As with adult cleaning the main purpose is to get rid of tartar and build up.

Deep Cleaning
A deep cleaning (Root Planing and Scaling) is required for individuals that are suffering from gum disease or are at risk of developing gum disease. When hardened plaque (calculus) builds up on the teeth, deep pockets in the gums develop, and gum disease ensues. To remove these larger plaques, the mouth is divided into quadrants and the deep cleaning is performed. While it is not always necessary to be numbed up for this procedure, often a dental anesthetic is used to ensure patient comfort.

Periodontal Maintenance
Periodontal maintenance is a type of dental cleaning performed to thoroughly clean the teeth and stop the progression of periodontal disease. You will need this type of cleaning if you've previously had a deep cleaning or periodontal surgery. Regular cleaning will not help treat or prevent the recurrence of periodontal disease.

Fluoride Varnish
Therapeutic application of topical fluoride varnish is a dental treatment that can help prevent tooth decay, slow it down, or stop it from getting worse. The varnish is painted on the top, front, and back of each tooth with a small brush. It forms a sticky covering over the tooth and becomes hard as it meets saliva. When combined with good dental hygiene at home, fluoride can greatly reduce the number of cavities. Typically, we apply fluoride varnish twice per year at your child’s dental cleaning appointments. It is recommended that the patient does not eat or drink for one hour following a fluoride varnish treatment.
