During a dental cleaning, your dentist will gently clean along and below the gum line to remove built-up plaque and tartar on your teeth. Basic cleanings are recommended every six months, but some patients may require specialized cleanings based on their oral health needs. Risas also offers fluoride varnishes as preventative care.

Dental plaque is a sticky film that forms on your teeth containing bacteria, leftover food particles and saliva. If left alone, plaque can lead to cavities, gingivitis and other oral health issues.
Tartar is hardened plaque that will make your gums swollen, a condition called gingivitis. If left untreated, it can cause permanent gum and bone damage. Only a dental cleaning can remove it.
Regular brushing and flossing helps keep the bacteria from building up and damaging your teeth and gums. However, tartar will build up over time even for the most diligent brushers, which is why cleanings are recommended every six months.
How often you need dental check-ups can vary depending on your oral health. However, we recommend that you have a dental exam and cleaning at least every six months so your dentist can monitor your oral health and catch any potential issues early.
